Question 1

What is a proprietary (prop) trading firm?

Accepted Answer

A prop firm funds traders with the firm's own capital. Instead of risking your own money, you pass an evaluation to prove your skill, then trade a funded account and keep a share of the profits you generate.

Question 2

How does a prop firm challenge work?

Accepted Answer

You buy a challenge for the account size you want and hit a profit target without breaking the firm's drawdown and trading rules. Pass, and you get a funded account. Some firms use a single step, others two or three, and a few offer instant funding with no evaluation.

Question 3

Is First For Traders free to use?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Comparing firms, reading reviews, and using our tools is completely free. We may earn a commission when you sign up through some of our links, which never changes the price you pay and often unlocks an exclusive discount.

Question 4

How do you decide which firms to list?

Accepted Answer

Every firm in our directory is manually reviewed by our team before it appears. We track pricing, rules, payout terms, and platform support, and we update the listings as firms change their offers.

Question 5

What is the difference between a 1-step and 2-step challenge?

Accepted Answer

A 1-step challenge has a single profit target to reach before funding. A 2-step challenge splits it into two phases, usually with a smaller target in each. More steps generally mean a lower price but a longer path to a funded account.

Question 6

What is a drawdown, and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

Drawdown is the maximum your account can lose before you fail. It can be measured end-of-day, as an intraday trailing figure, or as a static balance. It is the single most important rule to understand, because breaching it ends the challenge or funded account.

Question 7

What is a consistency rule?

Accepted Answer

A consistency rule caps how much of your total profit can come from a single day or trade, so payouts reflect steady trading rather than one lucky position. Each firm's exact wording is shown on its individual page.

Question 8

How do payouts and profit splits work?

Accepted Answer

Once funded, you keep a percentage of your profits, the profit split, commonly 80 to 100 percent. Firms pay out on different schedules, from daily to monthly, and some let you request a payout on demand once you meet their minimum requirements.
